The Top 20 Attributes of a Great Presenter

Source: RadioToday
John Simons is a radio executive, former group programming director for GMG Radio now working as an International Radio Consultant, mainly in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
I was lucky enough to catch John for an extensive conversation recently, he's led a pretty colourful life and maintains his passion for radio with ease. I'm looking forward to sharing that conversation in the future, but for now here is his quick fire top twenty tips for your presenter, all of which can be applied to producers as well. To stay on the same wavelength as your presenter and your audience I advise you take his advice to heart.

When you've got time, I recommend you check out the video in its entirety. Simons gives a concise, entertaining talk with anecdotes elaborating on the below list:

1.      Have something to say and don’t be afraid to say so. Don’t be inappropriate but you got to have something to say.
2.      Listen back to your own show every day.
3.      Present to one person – not the ‘audience’ e.g. “Hello listener” not “Hello listeners”
4.      Use social media effectively to stay relevant to the audience.
5.      Know your audience… go to the places & do the things your audiences do -
go the latest big movie, community events, hot TV shows, latest trends.
6.      Paint pictures with words
7.      Share some of your life with your listeners – be real
8.      Be keen to learn new skills
9.      Be friends with the Commercial/Sales Team
10.   Go out and be present with the community
11.   Promote and support fellow presenters on and off air
12.   Be well turned out and always on time
13.   Be able to laugh at yourself – and do it often!
14.   Always be hometown proud
15.   Do pre-work before and paperwork after the show
16.   Never be racist, sexist or bigoted
17.   Always pre-read scripts
18.   Listen to the all the other shows of the radio station
19.   Be well read – know what’s going on. Don’t pretend.
20.   Control stress and moods – don’t bring them into the studio. Be reliable in a crisis.
